Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set is a series of games based on OD&D released between 1977 to 1991.

History[edit | edit source]

Holmes Basic Set[edit | edit source]

The first version of D&D Basic, released in 1977.

Moldvay & Cook Basic & Expert[edit | edit source]

Known in the scene as B/X, Moldvay's and Cook's version was released alongside the first edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in 1981. It notably shipped with The Keep on the Borderlands, which made it the most iconic module of classic D&D. This version eventually got a supplement in the form of the Expert Set, which included rules for player characters from level 4 to 14.

Mentzer's BECMI[edit | edit source]

BECMI, released in 1983, revised and expanded on the rules on B&X, adding a Companion, Master and Immortals Box Rule Set along side it's Basic and Expert. Immortals ruled allowed player characters to ascend as godlike beings going on interplanar adventures.
